Python Timoriensis

Scientific name: Python timoriensis

Other common names: Timor python


General description: This is a slender quick racer of a python, with a long muscular tail. This species is patterned in colors of yellows, tans and browns. The head is yellow or tan and the borders of the head scales on the top of the head are outlined with dark pigment. The front half of the body has well defined dark and pale blotches, but the posterior half of the body is uniformly brown and without pattern.

Average adult size: 5’6"-8’

Distribution: This species is endemic to the Lesser Sundas islands of Indonesia. Lesser Sundas pythons are known to occur on Flores, Pantar, Lomblen and Adonara. Most specimens in captivity come from the vicinity of Larantuka, Flores. The species is not known to occur on Timor.

Comments: This is a very poorly known taxon with a relatively small US captive population. Lesser Sundas pythons are beautiful snakes that do well in captivity and prove to be undemanding captives. They tend to be high-strung and nervous animals. When restrained, they may defecate and snap in defense, but in other circumstances they are reluctant to bite. Captive-raised animals can become quite docile.
